The solutions listed in the titles are all for Android.
Talkatone is an IPhone port. I presume it is the way to go with IPhone.
WP is a sad story.Theoretically the PBXes relay solution would work for WP
if a generic SIP client can be found. However, none can be found so far.
Even then, you will need to figure out a way to keep wifi alive under screen
saver. Check off WP if free GV over wifi is your must-have.
Here are the reviews of the solutions:
==========
Groove IP:
This is the simplest solution. Fire up the software, enter your gmail id and
password and your are ready to make outbound calls and answer the inbound
calls. Since this from a 3rd party, I would create a spare gmail id just for
it.
pro: You vs. GV with no relay in between. Simplicity == Reliablility == ~100
% availability. The paid/bootleg version is non-intrusive.
con: You vs. GV with no relay in between. No compression == poor sound
quality at times == hard to maintain a conversation with poor wifi
connection. Unable to switch TCP/IP port == You have no monkey to play with
if the firewall does not open the ports (63?) used by GV, which is more
often than not the case with many wifi hotspots.
Verdict: Good solution if you have good wifi.
========
Talkatone: Very similar to Groove IP except that Talkatone has servers to go
between you and GV.
pro: The sound quality is much better than GrooveIP.
con: Expensive to remove the ad. The subscription has recuring charges that
totally cancels the purpose of using it. The ad version is rather annoying
and intrusive.
Verdict: Good back up.
==========
PBXes relay + Sip clients (SipDroid,CSipSimple, etc)
You can get a free account on PBXes to turn your GV account into a free SIP
account and make/receive calls with a generic SIP client. The most popular
client to go with PBXes is SipDroid because it sets up a free PBXes account
for you upon the first launch.
The PBXes account is rather complicated. But you need only to concern
yourself with 2 settings:
Trunk: This is the GV facing side. Replace the Sipdroid entered gmail
account with the one you want to use. Again, you don't want to use your main
gmail account here.
Extension: This is the sip client facing side. SipDroid always create a <
MainId>-200 extension with a secret password for itself. If you can figure
out what the password is, you can use the extension in a generic SIP client.
Alternatively, you can create another extension, or simply change that
secret password to your own password.
===========
SipDroid:
A piece of jewel/crap like German cars.If you know what you are doing, this
software gives you tons of stuff to tinker with. The phone UI is horrendous
just like any Made in Germany stuff. You have to use the menu key to bring
up the speaker / mute / etc. Nothing is intuitive. German, you know.
There is room for 2 SIP lines/accounts. PBXes.org is the default server. The
first line/account is pre-populated when SipDroid created your PBXes
account. The second line/account needs to be entered manually. It is usually
where people get stuck. When SipDroid create your free account, it gives a
secret password for the extension. Log in to PBXes.org and change the
extension password to something you know. And you should have no problem
getting both lines registered.
Both lines will use the default 5601 port. Change the second one to
something else, e.g. 5900. And you will have 2 perfect functional GV lines
in one phone.
pro: There is always a solution for any issue you encounter. You can pick an
open port to get around a firewall, for example. The connection/reconnection
under poor wifi is rock solid. The phone rings reliably even when the wifi
is not strong enough to make a conversation.
con: The phone UI is a major piece of crap. Get used to find things under
the menu button. The default codec is the best one but it requires good wifi
. Lower it if you wifi cannot take the load.
Verdict: For the DIYers.
=================
CSipSimple:
This is a drop in replacement for SipDroid. Find the PBXes under the
international providers and enter the SipDroid Extention id and password and
your are good to go.
You can have unlimited number of lines/accounts. However, there is no way to
set ports. If you have 2 PBXes lines, you can still make outbound calls
from either line perfectly. But only one of them will ring incoming calls. I
cannot figure out what determines the winner. I suspect it is the
registering order.
pros: The best phone UI of all. Beautiful and intuitive. Best echo
cancellation of all.
cons: Having trouble stay connected under poor wifi. If a connection attempt
chokes in the middle of the night, it stays choked until your open up the
app in the morning. If you don't want to miss call. This con alone kills the
deal. The default codec is a poorer one. Hence the voice quality isn't very
good. Up the setting if you have good wifi.
Verdict: For good wifi only.

When sipdroid set up your PBXes, it creates an -200 extension with a
secret password to prevent you from using the account in other sip clients.
Unfortunately it also prevents you to use the PBXes account as the second
line in your sipdroid.
The remedy is easy. Log in to your PBXes and change the-200 extension
password to something you know. Then you can come and add <2nd sipid>-200:<
yourpassword> as your 2nd line. You can also use it in CSipSimple if you
like its phone UI. SipDroid's phone UI is horrendous. The speaker/mute are
hidden in the menu and the dial pad is in an other window.
I don't use CSipSimple mainly because it does not reconnect successully
after you lose/regain wifi connection. If you have poor connection, you will
miss calls.
SipDroid keeps connection under the poorest wifi. The phone will ring even
when there isn't enough bandwidth to maintain a call. It gives me at least a
chance to find another phone to call back.

1.For security, you want to apply for a few spare gmail accounts for google
voice. Don't use your gmail accounts. On you PC...
1.1 Set up google voice acounts: log in to voice.google.com
1.2 Get a free phone number by following the pop up window
1.3 go to the setting and check Google Chat. The incoming mail will ring the
google chat if you are logged in to the gmail on your PC. All free android
google voice software take advantage of this by implementing a Google Chat
client to answer the incoming calls. You can uncheck you forwarding phone
number if you don't want the incoming calls to ring that phone.
1.4 Go over other settings to make sure they are the way you want.e.g. You
want to uncheck the forwarding of the text & voice mail to your email if you
already install google voice client on your phone.
2. Generate PBXes.org relay accounts.
2.1 On your phone, go to play store, download and run SipDroid.
2.2.SipDroid will offer to create a new PBXes.org account for your if none
of you lines is already set up. click that.
2.2 Enter a sip account id and password and click create. I would just use
the GV phone number as sip account id. This is important because the sip
account id will show up in the android notification. Using the phone number
as id and you don't have to remember the id->phone number mapping.Remember
to use a password that is different than your google password.
2.3 The account creation will take a minute or so. PBXes.org will send you a
welcome email when is done.
2.4 On you PC, log in to PBX.org to set up the account. You will see a crap
load of settings. Don't touch any of them. You need to set the Trunk (google
side) and Extension (Android side)
2.5 Click Trunk, A drop down will show a single Trunk GTALK/[email protected]
gmail.com. Click on it and change the Gmail acount to one of the google
voice accounts you created in step1, fill in the correct gmail password. You
are sharing your gmail account with PBXes.org here, this is why you don't
want to use your main gmail account here!!! This trunk set up the connection
between PBXes and GV.
2.6 Click Extention: A dropdown will show a-200 extension. This
extension is the connection between PBXes and your phone. The extension has
a SipDroid created secret password. Change the password to something you
know. Click submit. A red page header will show up to ask you to confirm.
Click it to confirm.
2.7 you are done with PBXes.org relay accounts. You can use this account in
any sip client. The credentials:
Server: PBXes.org
username:-200 (Yes, use the extension!!)
password:
3. SipDroid would have set up line 1 while setting up the PBXes.org account.
Change the password to the one you entered in step 2.7 and you are good to
go.
4. CSipSimple will pop a list of providers upon the first launch. Look for
PBXes.org under the Internation drop down.
5. To create a second PBXes.org account, you can either uninstall & install
SipDroid to make it forget about line 1. Or you can simply delete the
username of line one and go to manage application to force close it. Or even
simpler just go to manage application and delete data. Deleting data will
force close the app and turn it into a virgin. Follow step 2 to create the
second account. Use credentials you get in step 2.7 to set up line 2.
6. (For IQ>70 only)Step 2.6 is essential if you plan to do step 5. The
default secret SipDroid password for the sip extension will get lost during
step 5. You will need to do step 2.6 or else you won't be able to set line 1
and line 2 afterwards. Please do not come crying to me that the sip
extension is useless when you try to enter it by hand. The secret extension
password is NOT your main sip account password. :)
