If you can survive Keasling's or Liao's lab, you will have a very good chance to land a decent job. But don't know any postdoc working in their labs with an evolution background. A lot of evolution people switch to bioinformatics and genome scale analysis. There are plenty of job opportunities for them. Many departments including mine are recruiting genomics persons this year.
I have thought about bioinformatics but it seems to me that this field is restricted to academia and does not have much relevance to industry. Therefore, I figure the job market for Bioinformatics is not big and, with its increasing hotness, it might saturate soon. You sound like an insider of the field. Do you agree with me? Thanks for you comments.

I agree with you. Most of my bioinformatics friends are faculties somewhere. There are a few in industry and some are working as staff in academic centers. The point is most of them land good jobs, or relatively good job compared to other bio-related major. If you want industrial relevance, then CS is a good fit for you. I am not knowledgeable enough to know what bio-related stuff has a lot industrial relevance. Maybe food science and real fermentation technology. But that is generally not in Bio department. Good luck. Make the decision and don't look back. Stay away from small wet labs if you can.
