Can't believe he has the audacity to put this in writing. This is a despicable violation of HR regulations. He still holds a position in Berkeley I think, someone in the UC system or anyone who concerns about his research integrity and vicious coercion should report this to the Berkeley HR officials. His position at UC Berkeley should be challenged. All he does is promoting an adverse environment in biologic research during his pursuit of personal fame.

Why don't you do it then? Go consult with your attorney to find out how you as an outsider can litigate.

simply trying to speak up for abused postdocs and grads, litigation would be much more powerful from someone who are involved rather than a bystander. if you got nothing to contribute, try not to be an asshole, although it might be quite a daunting task for you.

should report to 劳工部,工会。为啥postdoc不成立工会阿? 像美国长滩码头工人 一样,不涨薪水,就联合罢工

hostile work environment 如果给博后签的合同中没有要求作时间〉60小时,而time sheet pay里work hours<60/ week 这封邮件的要求走人的措辞符合下面这条: The acts done must be "severe or pervasive enough to create a work environment that a reasonable person would consider intimidating, hostile, or abusive." 但确实需要他的employee 来做

On the issue, I think Poo's email is justified, and you are wrong and misleading. Now on your remarks directed at my posting. Don't kid yourself! There's nothing of your doing to really speak of. So quick to resort to profanity at first sniff of a different opinion. That tells something about your thought 's coherence, which doesn't seem much really. Readers should heavily discount anything you say, probably to nothing.

I think UCalifornia graduate students are unionized. I don't know about post-doc. His letter won't violate California lab law 10 years ago. However, I believe today it will if the overtime is not paid or been ruled not expected work load by court.

I remember postdocs are also unionized in CA now but not 10 years ago.You can say Poo is mean but his letter didn't violate any law of that time. In fact, his letter may not even violate any law nowadays but may violate union contract. Some people are just too young and sometimes naive, :-).

The bottom line: The positions in question are salary jobs, not wage jobs. On a salary job (should you decide to take one), you are obligated to fulfill your end of the bargain, that is, meeting performance expectations. Hours per se do not matter. If you're unable or unwilling to perform, you must leave, regardless of how hard you try or how many hours you put in. This is a matter of contractual obligation and work ethics. Who's to judge performance? Of course the boss! Poo was trying to articulate what his expectations are. And, I think he went extra miles in doing that for the benefit of his employees. The focal point here is performance. Poo was obviously extremely upset about some lab members's lack of satisfactory progress toward performance expectations. He basically pointed out the obvious, in his line of work, putting in enough hours is a necessary condition for meeting performance objectives. Don't get distracted by cynics' meaningless rants. Focus on your career success. Believe it or not, your boss probably has a bigger personal stake in your success than the incoherent cynic who started this thread.
