My two cents:
Bioinformatics can be a good direction if you are interested in it. The pay
varies a lot. If you are interested in getting more financial rewards in
this field, you have to go to industry, and Ph.D. is not required.
My own experience:
Ph.D. in bioinformatics, work for industry. I have 10 employees, including
both CS, bioinformatics, and biomedical engineering. Salary is the similar
for Ph.D. or M.S, regardless of their major.
