well, I think most students are nice and will be more serious if you tell them that the evaluation is important to you. At least you can ask them to be constructive.

Thank you for sharing the information. The first one is very useful. Two of my students complained about the short notice of the exam formats.

If it is a review session, the students with lower grade tend to come and give you bad comments. I think the outcome highly depends on the type of class and the kind of students that are attending.
we do online evaluation here. it is indeed a problem that people who never attended my class judged me very poorly. Poeple actually told me that it is more advantagous to the instructor to have evaluation done within class sessions.

I agree. Also, if they do it online at their own convenience, they can discuss it among themselves.

The problem with online evaluation is that the participation rate might be very low. Frankly speaking, most students do not care about the evaluations, especially if it is online. I do not think they can even discuss it...

in my class this semester, I am using "points system" for attendance . basically, after 12-15 times attendance, they will earn all the points, the last two three classes may not have points allocated, bad students wont show up if there are no points at the end.(hell they even wont show for points anyway) I dont know if this works to improve my teaching evals this semester,but I will surely come back with an update and tell you guys. Students nowadays have more power than they know how to use.

评Tenure时我们学校看的是和系里平均值的比较。只要在平均值上一点点就好了。 所以online evaluation可能把所有人的评价都降低了,那么平均值也就低了。 Teaching is not a problem unless it is a problem. 以上是我开始上班的第一天我的mentor告诉我的。你的研究强,那么teaching 保持在平均值附近就好了。上课时对学生用点心,课后多和学生交流,给分公平 没有学生到系里complain,就好了。

This does not need IRB in my university as long as you do not publish the results in a research paper.
