Risk management and audit are two different fields. Audit focuses on
compliance with GAAP and ensures the numbers are right. Risk management
focuses on process and specific risks you are managing.
If you work in the audit practice, you can gain some US GAAP experience and
then decide what you want to do for the rest of your careers- options are
corp accounting, auditing (internal and external audit), financial analysts
and etc.
For risk management you need to ask your hiring manager what industry and
risk you are managing. And decide if that is what you are interested to do.
For financial service industy, such as bank, they have credit risk,
interest rate risk, prepayment risk, and etc. another possible service line
is internal audit testing. It is under the unbralla of risk management.
One observation is layoffs are more aggressive to the risk team in recession
because some team members are considered lack of "technical skill", I.e.
USGAAP
Usually advisory practice pays better and works less. It is also more
difficult to get in without experience.
However for the long term, audit can give you a solid foundation of US Gaap
and opens doors to many options.
Last but not least, advisory practice usually travels more.
