This linguist might be an excellent linguist but s/he is
obviously not in the field of Chinese language or hasn't
studied it as thoroughly as those great linguists born in
China. this criterion of categorizing language is truly too
simplistic. categorizing language requires multiple criteria
which encompasses not only present-day reasons but also
historical reasons, philosophical reasons, social dynamics,
the sound system, the written system, etc., etc.... [by
using Chinese we do understand one

古英语从语言书写上也难以理解。
词有变化。
而且你真的完全无法理解香港的书写？
大意还是明白的。
换句话说吧，我这里有一片singlish阅读练习。书面的。
singlish就是所谓singapore english.
对于同样的所谓一种语言english的用法，也有很多不同。
不知道我能否还能找到这个练习。当初我看到之后，
第一遍我只能理解其中20%左右的意思。
而且singlish在accent上大量结合了福建，客家，广东话
的节奏。
据说，英国的非伦敦地区，比如什么约克郡。还有澳洲某些地方
都有严重的口音。虽然我不知道是否用法也有不同。
不过可以肯定由于地域化，在对同一个english使用上必然也有
很多不同。所以我非常难以理解这位语言学家为什么提出这个
问题。难道她仅仅因为考虑到欧洲的语言现象？同一语系大量
语言分支？not sure.不明白。
当然了，这个东西也有实效性，你说2000年后出现一种香港语
和香港文，我也不会觉得奇怪，而且十之八九，也是象早期日语
没有自己的文字，采用汉字来训读日语发音。那么日语算不算
一种语言呢，在那个时候。现在日语又有什么变化呢。

Yes, you are right!//support!
there are a lot of articles and books devoted to varieties
of languages (i.e. sub-groups within one big/widely used
language). the same is true to English -- there is a very
famous journal called "World Englishes", which deals with
exactly the phenomenon you are talking about. Chinese is the
same. different varieties of one language are usually
different in:
(1) accent (see my previous posts);
(2) vocabulary (including and especially for slangs --
