Former US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger has said the US should remain
neutral on the Diaoyu Islands dispute between China and Japan. He expressed
the view during a think-tank seminar in Washington.
He also mentioned the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between Japan and the
People's Republic of China. He said at the time of signing the agreement in
1978, China and Japan had decided to temporarily lay aside the issue of
Diaoyu Islands sovereignty.
He said, "There was no active American involvement, as I remember, a
conclusion that was reached between Japan and China. And my dearest wish is
that. The United States should take a position on sovereignty."
