- location: SF city (near bart)
- experience requirement: min 2 years with modeling (hard requirement.
school, academic research, internship, or non-relevant experience does not
count.)
- usual tools: hive/pig, python, R, bash scripting, tableau, ppt. (getting
spark in a few month)
- data: medium size, all structured data
- pay/title level: flexible, depending on experience, competitive, but
cannot match big-cow pay in FLG
- communication: good communication skill needed. 不求舌翻莲花， but there
are a lot of interaction with business, so expect decent business
communication skill (which is quite different than talking with engineers).
for example, if you want to use gbm for prediction, how do you get the
business comfortable with your model? (not an easy task)
- hiring manager: chinese
- a medium-size, fast growing public company hiring a data scientist (pretty
small team)
- work with different business teams (marketing, finance, operation, etc) on
advanced analytics and data science projects (like a consultant internal to
the company)
- work is much closer to business than to engineering, even though the
reporting org is tech dept. (there is another team which does data
engineering/architecture, like hadoop, pipeline, kafka etc if needed.)
- strong emphasis on business acumen (e.g. even if you can predict X, what
does it mean for business in terms of operation? what can they do to make
use of and benefit from your model?)
- more emphasis in scope than depth (一般情况用轮子，不造轮子. so it might
not be a good fit for people who is more interested in deep ML research.)
- you will need to automate, implement, and push your own models into
production yourself. end-to-end.
- some work experience with time series forecasting a plus.
