when I try to add a web reference in VS.NET in windowsXP, IIS is running,
the project folder in under wwwroot and set to be an application, ASPNET
user permission set. Then when I click on the local web services, it prompts
me to save or to open the asmx file -- it only has one line:
. Whatever I choose, the "add
reference" is disabled.
When I tried to do this on windows 2003, the VS.NET report cannot find the
asmx file. Actually it can find htm,..., ot

are you able to access the wsdl file from your browser?
if it is the case, you could manually enter the wsdl file location
like this: http://localhost/mywebservice.asmx?wsdl

Thanks. Anyway, problem was solved after asking a friend.
Summary: in windowsxp, seems by default the asmx file cannot be recognized by
IE, need to run "aspnet_regiis -i" after installing .NET framework.
As to error message when reading asmx files, need to clear build in VS.NET and
rebuild the solution.
Then everything is fine.

Not right. asmx(and other .net file type) file does not assocaite with iis
because you install .net framework before the iis.

OK. Revised summary: if you installed .net framework before IIS, then...
