根据边际效用递减的原则，五个人在饭店点五个菜并且共享，显然比每个人分别点菜吃
菜效用要高。而且从饭店
的角度来看，这样顾客更有可能点不止五个菜。可是为什么大部分美国人都是各自点菜
呢？
我的两个解释是：
1.卫生，但是用公筷、公勺完全可以解决这个问题；
2.费用，每个人自己点什么吃什么，而且只付自己的菜金，但是大部分时候大家都还是
平分全部费用的；
不知各位有没有考虑过这个问题，各有什么解释？谢谢

是不是因为西餐热量高，容易吃的饱，不用大盘小盘地望上端，所以也不用分享了。

Interesting question.
It might have something to do with the strong sense of private property
rights in the western culture. Sharing dishes might maximize your utility,
but not necessarily. What if I do not like what you ordered? What if some
are vegetarian and some are not? What if I do not have good appetite now and
only want a soup or a salad? What if there are some leftover? Who can bring
it home? Also female tends to eat less than male....After taking into
account all those scenarios, the t

You made very good point, people do tend to order more than they can eat and
waste more when the cost is shared, so ordering your own food might prove to
have higher utility, given the reduced cost, and more satisfaction that I
control what I eat.
Another point might be that for westerns the utility from eating is much
less
than for the oriental people, who take food more seriously, and sharing food
with your friends (or even strangers) is a way of showing prosperity and
hospitality. Also I do o

You just don't need to order a lot with "western" cuisine. One main
course plus a little appetizer & dissert and you're full. People do share
dissert though.
