I have kind of similar background. Just want to share with my experiences so far. Hopefully it will help you to make a decision. I also taught in a top univ. before I came to the States. When I finished my Master in TESOL here, because of the pressure of job market and residence status, I switched to CS, like a lot people did. After working in CS for couple of years, I still feel being a teacher is one of the best professions for women to take care of family. Then I decided to go back to Education. Since I already have a MA in education and passed NY state required tests, I thought that I was all set. But after I submitted the application for NYS license, I received a loooooong list of courses that I have to take to fulfill NYS requirements. Because my MA was earned in another state, NYS doesn’t accept most of the credits. Because I already have two masters, I don’t want to have another one. So, to fulfill the requirements, I just registered in some accredited colleges for the required credits as non-matriculate student. As you may know, a non- matriculate student normally can only take no more than 9 credits in one school. (The max number of credits may vary but on average max is 9 credits, which is equivalent to 3 courses.) But I am asked to take 10 courses by NYS dept. of Ed. Therefore, I have to attend a few different schools to finish the credits. The most difficult part is student teaching. If you are not a non-matriculate student, you are not allowed to register for student teaching in that school. It is very difficult to find a position for student teaching if there is no school support. This is where I am stuck now. After all these being said, my lessons learned, here are the suggestions to you: 1) ask yourself what you truly like: I believe this is the last chance to make a career path change at this age. (I don’t know how old you are but that’s how I feel.) 2) if you taught college students before, do you mind teaching elementary /high schools? (To me, it is really a challenge.) 3) if you decide to continue pursuing a career in high education institute, continue your Ph D program. (This is what I feel most regretful.) 4) if you don’t mind being a teacher in a public elementary/high schools , take a MA in the same state where you want to apply the license. Again different states have quite different requirements. I would highly recommend you taking a MA program rather than taking some credits to fulfill the state requirements. Based on your description on your background, it looks like there is no way to get around with majority of the courses. In addition , student teaching is required in the specific grade level and subject that you are applying for. Your previous experience doesn’t count, at least in NY State. Good luck!
