bald != shaved head.
shaved head = have hair, but choose to shave it off.
bald = no hair, no choice
If someone is described as having a shaved head, I would expect to see
stubbles. But if someone is described as being bald, then he has lost his
hair.
Bald isn't necessarily rude. You often hear people being described as
balding, or kinda bald, or whatever. It's just a description.

查了查字典，alopecia这个词是肯定不能用的。我确实是觉得这个bald就有秃头症的意
思在里面。不管人家是真的秃还是shaved，还是要谨慎用词。就象中文里＂秃头＂和＂
光头＂还是有些区别...

Right, "alopecia" is a clinical term, and baldness does usually
refer to hair loss, not a shaved head.
Baldness can also refer to depilation, especially of the Brazilian kind.
In any case, never mistakenly use the term "skin head".
