this has sth to do with the difference between ocean currents along pacific and atlantic coast. ocean temperatures are very different between atlantic and pacific oceans if one pays attention. in east coast, warm water from gulf flows north along coast, hence brings the extra heat, in pacific coast, cold water from alaska and canada flows south, takes away the head from land
