非BSO. 要是你是 a fresh phd from a top10 cs department, 有 Amazon and eBay 的 research scientist offers (做 applied research), 同时有 Goog and Facebook software engineer
offers, 不考虑工资差异, 单纯从 career path 角度将, 你选哪个?
揪解的原因是: SDE 满街都是, 虽然赚钱不比 research scientist 少, 但是PhD专业
算废了, 以后就纯码工了, 要是若干年后回国, 总不能吹自己是SDE 吧. Scientist 的
title 好听, 也能用到PHD的专长, 以后回国还可能弄个 sr. scientist or director
research 当当.是不是公司里, scientist 也更受重视些? 不过也看过有人说:
industry position == 码工, no matter what title.不知道是不是夸张了...
换句话说,是选 job title 还是选 风头劲的公司呢? 没有公司混的经验, 所以请过来
人给些建议吧, 谢先!

现在 FACULTY 很难啊... 以前师兄师姐也没见去好学校的... 已经决定去工业界了,
只是没想好 scientist vs. SDE 的选择...

google没有research scientist吧。上次google来我们学校这么说的。

Absolutely research scientist.
你可以做几年再跳到Google 做 research scientist.
剩下的就看你舍不舍得 Facebook的 RSU

如果是 microsoft 的 research scientist, 可能也不会这么纠结. 不知道 eBay and
Amazon 的 scientist 份量多重了.感觉 eBay and Amazon research group 比
microsoft research, 甚至 yahoo reseach 都差不少. 难道我理解有误?
大概我孤陋寡闻, Google research scientist 没看见招人广告啊? 是不是不招 fresh
啊? Google research scientist 啥待遇?

MSR 的好像就叫 researcher.
Google, MSR似乎都不招 fresh PhD.
所以说你可以用 Amzon, Ebay做跳板。
不管在哪里，Research 比 Engineer的 qualification 都要高一些， base也高些。
我是这么觉得。

没错, 是叫 researcher at MSR. 我笼统称 (research) scientist.仔细将是
researcher/research scientst/scientist的区别.
不知道 eBay and Amzn Research 口碑如何了. 面世时感觉虽然叫 (research)
scientist, 可是 engineering(coding) 还瞒重视的. 所以担心不是正真意义的
scientist. 感觉是 scientist+engineer 的活.

今年啊，两个月前来的时候说的，说统一就是software engineer,不分的。software
engineer也可以做research的东东。难道这是为了迷惑敌人？

如果纯考发paper是真正意义的scientist, Amzn eBay现在应该都不是。
Amazon也许更有潜力往纯research靠。无论如何，比纯 engineer要好。
Google software engineer听说也有很多搞一些research
我以为你纠结的主要是 Facebook的股票

我学长现在是CS master
把facebook offer拒了，
因为他还想继续读PHD，不愿意quit
他拿到这个offer是因为之前是summer intern。

搭一下便车，一个硅公问：3个offer选哪个？
INTC 的 Research Scientist （project based,但是鼓励发paper) 钱最少，在OR
QCOM 的 System Architect (结构分析，制定软硬件接口，划分 etc),钱一般，在SD
BRCM 的 Scientist (==engineer， 底层软件开发 ),钱最多(多20%)，在 Irvine...
选哪个？

IBM很牛，应该比MSR都好些，HP最近不行啊，估计连GE lab都比不上了。

我个人的感觉是，你可以check一下ebay，amzon那些scientist的publication，如果他
们真的有好的pub的话，绝对选择前者。如果没有，是proj-based，我觉得还不如做
google做个码工，因为google的许多proj就是research，经常可以看到google的牛
paper。进去后选个好个proj，不必任何research lab差。至于FB，如果你要的是钱，
就FB了（不过google的钱也不少）。

even if for M$, you have to be in the research lab to be real research
scientist. the research scientist in amazon and ebay will not do much real
research things.

why? I thought engineer is too narrowly focused...大公司里一个萝卜一个坑。就
做那么一点点东西。。。scientist至少可以自己找projects...

就我所知, MSR > IBM. IBM 总体可以, 但是鱼龙混杂. MSR 精英比例大些. EBAY 排最

You are right. MS and MSR are two things -- I should have clearly said
researchers at MSR.

They are proj-based and that's my concern -- scientist title but engineer
job. My guess is that, after several years, scientists can still apply for
scientist jobs at other places; SDEs most likely will be disqualified even
they are top SDEs from Google/Facebook... However, that's my guess (that's
why I'm asking people here).

CEO will also limit your options a lot for job switch, but would you like to
be CEO? :-)
The issue here is:
if( Diff = CEO - SDE)
take CEO
else if(Diff = scientist - SDE)
evaluate the significance of Diff, which is difficult since I don't know.

MSR和google都招fresh phd做researcher。
facebook即使没有researcher这个title，内部还是有些工程师在做一些research，还
经常的发paper。
