How to Eat An Avocado
Posted by Eric Lissner on February 6, 2013
How do you eat an avocado? It’s pretty easy. Slice it open, from pole to
pole, cutting around the pit. Remove this pit. Top with whatever you want,
then eat with a spoon. No cooking is necessary or recommended. The avocado
’s flavor is mild and quite buttery; don’t cover it up too much.
As you may notice, avocado matches well with Mexican flavors. You can’t go
wrong with lemon/lime juice, cilantro, tomatoes, red onions, green onions,
chiles, cumin, salt, and pepper, in combination. Make sure to have something
bitter or acidic to contrast the avocado’s richness.
As with most commercialized fruits, you can by many varieties of avocado.
You’ll most often find Hass avocados in the grocery store. They have a
thick, green-black skin that’s perfect for shipping long distances. To be
honest, 99% of the avocados that I’ve had in my life were Fuerte avocados.
I’m lucky enough to have 3 Fuerte avocado trees in my parents’ backyard.
If you ask me, Fuerte is superior to Hass. All the pictures in this post
contain Fuerte avocados. For a more in-depth analysis, see here.
Ingredients:
1 avocado
toppings, as listed below.
How to Eat an Avocado: Twelve ways.
Option #1: Plain
If they’re good enough, you don’t need anything. Because I enjoy lots of
flavor, it’s not my favorite way to eat them (see option #6 for that).
Avocado
Option #2: Salt, Pepper, and Lemon/Lime Juice
A few drops of citrus juice liven up the creamy avocado, while the salt and
pepper provide flavor.
Avocado with Salt, Pepper, and Lemon Juice
Option #3: White Balsamic Vinegar, Salt, and Pepper
Similar to option #2, but more of a mellow and sweeter flavor, thanks to the
white balsamic vinegar.
Avocado with White Balsamic Vinegar, Salt, and Pepper
Option #4: White Sugar
Have you ever tried it this way? I didn’t think so. Avocado with Sugar
Option #5: Soy Sauce
It’s a creamy-salty combination unlike anything you’ve tasted.
Avocado with Soy Sauce
Option #6: Lime juice, Chili Powder, and (Homemade) Garlic Salt
Mexican flavors.
Avocado with Lime Juice, Chili Powder, and Garlic Salt
Option #7: Lime Juice, Green Onions, Cilantro, Salt, and Pepper
More Mexican flavors.
Avocado with Lime Juice, Cilantro, Green Onions, Salt, and Pepper
Option #8: Chiles, Onions, Cumin, Salt, and Pepper
Even more Mexican flavors.
Avocado with Chiles, Onions, Cumin, Salt, and Pepper
Option #9: Honey and Cocoa Powder
Similar to option #4, a touch of sweetness and chocolate goes miles to
bolster the taste of the avocado.
Avocado with Honey and Cocoa Powder
Option #10: Finely-Chopped Dried Mangoes
You’ll initially taste the creaminess of avocado flesh, but then you’ll
get a burst of sweetness from the mangoes. Why not try it?
Avocado with Chopped Dried Mangoes
Option #11: Bacon
Salty and smoky bacon bits, while probably as fatty as the avocado itself,
add complementary complex flavor.
Avocado with Bacon Bits
Option #12: Cotija or Feta Cheese
Do use cotija, feta, or other tangy cheese to offset the avocado’s
creaminess. Don’t use cheddar or other mild cheeses.

I used to spread ripe avocado over toast and spray a little bit pepper. I
like it more than butter or cream cheese.
I make omelette with avocado.
I like avocado as salad dressing, great substitute of bottled salad dressing.
I love avocado in general. I can eat it alone or mix it with many other
