In the latest accident, a 69-year-old woman was attempting to get off a
Manhattan-bound E train when she was caught between the doors at the
Roosevelt Avenue station in Queens during the morning rush. The authority's
head of system safety, Albert Dzingelis, said the woman, Yolanda Abenante of
Elmhurst, Queens, suffered shoulder, neck and chest injuries. Dragged by
Train
Last week, a 60-year-old Manhattan man, Paul Ruud-Renault, was caught in the
doors and dragged by a train in the 36th Street station in Queens,
suffering leg, back and head injuries.
On Aug. 28, Stella Romeo, 45, of Jamaica, Queens, was struck and killed by
an F train at the Union Turnpike-Kew Gardens station in an accident under
investigation by state and Federal safety agencies. There were no witnesses,
but since her pocketbook was recovered inside the train and there was blood
on the outside of several cars, officials said they believed she was caught
by the doors and dragged into the roadbed.
So far this year, Mr. Dzingelis said, there have been 14 passengers caught
in the doors, some of whom have also been dragged along the platform. He
added that other incidents might not have been reported or verified. 'Push-
Back' Feature
Unlike elevator doors, city subway car doors do not spring open by
themselves when blocked but must be opened and closed again by train crews.
However, they are designed so that riders can push the panels up to three
inches apart before an indication light goes out, a warning to the crew that
the doors are open. This ''push back'' feature enables passengers to free
themselves or belongings without holding up the train, but it can also
result in a rider being caught while the light to proceed is on.
State Senator Franz S. Leichter of Manhattan released a survey Wednesday
showing that other transit systems, including those in Washington, Atlanta,
Chicago and San Francisco, have mechanisms that either prevent trains from
moving or warn operators when doors are open anywhere from three-eighths of
an inch to an inch.
After yesterday's accident, Mr. Gunn said: ''Obviously, we're concerned that
this sort of thing happens. If you can leave the push-back but have a more
finite point at which you don't get indication, that seems to be desirable.''
He added, however, that he was not sure whether the doors on the city trains
could be modified.
The authority's study will involve the car-equipment, engineering and safety
departments. Suppliers of door systems will also be consulted. Campaign
Planned
Mr. Gunn also said the authority would be starting a campaign urging riders
not to try to pry doors open once they have shut. ''It's the only city I've
ever seen where people do that,'' he said, ''and it's dangerous.''
In a draft memorandum written in April, a Transit Authority engineer
suggested that the push-back feature be eliminated from one door in each two
-panel set, cutting the play to an inch and a half and presumably reducing
the risk that someone would become trapped without the crew knowing it. The
idea was rejected.
Although the authority is in the midst of a $40 million program to rewire
the door mechanisms to make them less likely to fly open while a train is in
motion, officials have defended the push-back feature as the safest design.
Given the crowds the system must carry, they say, they also fear that any
change that would increase the number of times the doors have to be reopened
and closed would cause delays.
