What has finally happened is that an underlying and long ignored problem has
been outed and shame has been heaped upon Monta Vista. Sadly, such behavior
is all too common at Monta Vista. This time it just happened to be so
flagrant as to be undeniable.
It is well understood that minority oppression is borne out of ignorance.
Jews are clearly a small minority at Monta Vista, not to mention Cupertino.
The negligible contact that the vast majority of students have with Jews
sustains ignorance which, in turn, allows stereotypes to flourish. But, as
is the nature of things, such behavior only flourishes when it goes
unchecked and, unfortunately, the absence of any correction - whether in the
home or school - has indeed left such onerous behavior unchecked.
Consequently, adolescents in this milieu find themselves perpetuating the
ugly stereotypes of antisemitism - perhaps even innocently or because of
nothing more than sophomoric insensitivity - because it has become so
socially normalized. .
District spokeswoman Sue Larson voiced outrage and stated that this incident
will not be swept under the rug. I implore the school district and Monta
Vista in particular to learn from this event and find ways to teach students
in a serious and intentional manner about racism and intolerance - the
history and on-going presence in the greater world and in their own
community.
