For the last 20 years or so, she lived in the Woodcrest area of Riverside,
California, not far from my daily haunts. Of course, like most celebrities,
she led a rather secluded life, but much less so than the others. In fact,
she was not a rare sight on the local musical scene, including the annual
free concerts on the Fourth of July.
Her funeral was held this afternoon, at which Christina Aguilera gave a
pretty good rendition of Etta James' most acclaimed hit, "At Last."
