去年开始拿National Research Council的associateship，这是National Academy of
Sciences下面的一个program （http://sites.nationalacademies.org/PGA/RAP/PGA_047746），要求自己报税，没有W-2或者任何表格，每个月也不扣FICA和medicare。自己按季度交tax whithheld。今年报税时被告知这样的钱(stipend)要算在self employment income（Form 1040, line 12, busines income）里面，在一般的收入税之外还要交一笔self-employment tax (line 56)，很多钱啊！！！ 在NRC的网页上找到这样的话：
When personal services are not provided as a condition for an award, the IRS
generally takes the position that grant awards are not subject to social
security self-employment tax.
不知道这是不是讲可以不用报self-employment tax？如果不用报的话，那么stipend的
收入可以填在哪一栏？line 7(wages,... etc.)?要是必须交self-employment tax的话
，那这个NRC associateship 就要大打折扣了。
附：我要按照resident报税。
