I think the entertainment center room is better in basement because: 1. sound
insulation 2. Dim Light control 3. Speakers installed on ceiling and walls 4.
for large screen.
Many family rooms are not good for the entertainment center because they have
too many windows, the sunlight is too strong in summer, it is hard to see the
screen. Usually there is also a fireplace in the familly, and some area is
devoted to traffic, in many cases there is only one place you can put your TV.
