1. we need to understand the scope of inspection. inspector only inspects accessible areas. i.e. what's underneath the ground (foundation) or behind the dry walls (framing) can't be inspected any way; 2. structural inspections supposed to be done during construction and if done properly, prop should have sound foundation and structure. these deal w/ much bigger concerns on bldg & public safety and handles diligently by city and gov't agencies; 3. by law (at least in CA) new homes come w/ 10-yr warranty on structural. so safety shouldn't been a concern to some degree. ie. when car has power train warranty, engine & transmission are the least to be concerned of; 4. builder reputation dictates the general home quality; 5. brand new appliance & plumbing usually don't break quickly. similar happens when Best Buy sells customer warranty on refrigerators. so inspection doesn't help much in this respect. doing inspection on new home won't hurt but considering the cost effectiveness, i would argue against it. on the other hand, doing home work on builder selection, studying community & master planned development probably provides more benefit.
