you never know how dirty the evaporators are. Before the lousy american took the evaporator out from the A/C system, I never though the underside of the evaporator could be like that. Dust and mold almost completely painted the underside of the evaporator. Then no wonder why the A/C guy recharged the A/C with 3 lb R-22, and nothing was improved. Actually, the A/C system was not installed properly at the first time point and some dusts could by-pass the filter and finally landed at the underside of the evaporator in the past 15 years, forming the dark, wet and moldy layer blocking the air flow and reducing the heat exchange there. Now, I think the A/C system was never lacking any R-22. It is just because of the thick mold and dust layer. With a 3 ton A/C for a one story house of 1100-1200 square feet, it should not have any difficulty to make the house 20 F degree lower than the outside. But it had this problem t for past 9 year since the owner bought this house. They jusgt kept adding R-22, in fact I doubt those guys actually added anything. Last time, Imore thought the A/C might have water inside or clog. He never thought about the evaporator could be blocked just by in-taken dusts and later mold.
