Want to have a bright one for the small reading room which doesn't have a
ceiling light socket.

I prefer to use a "ri guang deng"....
But I can only find the bulb...

the light spectrum from a fluorescent light stick is no different from a CFL
(compact fluorescent lamp), except it is physically wider. For the lamp
itself, I

Now I can find 24inch and 48inch ones. Not sure which one to use... I wish
there are 36 inch ones...

That room is very small, around 10x10 ft

I think so, but I am hesitate to use these in my study. I have 5-6 of them (
48") in my unfinished basement and garage, but putting them in a finished
room, it appears a little bit rough (it is perfectly fine functionality-wise
).
what's wrong with a floor lamp? or a desk lamp? when I read (which I rarely
do these days), the rest of the room does not have to be bright.

because the room is too small... After I put a desk and bookcases, there
is no room for a floor lamp...
A desk lamp is not enough for the whole room, and somehow I just don't like
the feeling of reading under a desk lamp.
I like the whole room to be very bright. It seems those wide fluorescent
lights are the best in this situation.

cables? do you have access to the attic?

if ceiling work requires, it might be just better to install 4 recessed cans
with LED lights

Yeah, I have access to the attic.
I am also thinking about hanging it directly on the wall and hide the wires
behind bookcases, don't know if that will work though...
