I am a new PI, and am feeling a little depressed trying to interview
postdocs:
I interviewed a candidate who told me that he could start late January and
was
willing to apply for fellowship (he is american)...everything seemed good
until this Friday, after I already unofficially gave him an offer and he
committed orally.
The red flags are:
He initially told me that he could start in late January, and last Tuesday
he
still showed eagerness to start the job asap and I told him to start late
Feb or March 1st (he did not have problems). He said he would send me
his fellowship draft this weekend for me to revise.
However two days later, in a following up email, he started to say that late
February would be too early and he needed to make the manuscript
satisfactory to
his current PI (which he had already finished with his current PI) and visit
his sister who would give birth in March. I replied and said, I will accept
March 1st latest (as I already told him before)
So until today, he has not sent me his fellowship draft, nor replied to my
request on starting date.
If you were me, would you move on and consider other candidates? I feel bad
because I spent so much time to help him formulate the fellowship ideas and
think things were good.
