Your son is a nice boy; he works well in class; however, at times he can be
a bit chatty. His writing is progressing nicely. We will continue to work on
writing in a small moment format and expanding upon the moment. I also
suggest that he should not be afraid to take risks in his writing, adding
more crafting elements. he grasps most math concepts quickly and without any
confusion.
I wish he would add more of his thinking to his written work and
assignments and elaborate on his good ideas. Sometimes I do not feel that I
get all that he has to give. He is a pleasure to have in class. Keep up the
good work!
就是说我儿子有一些chatty？这对于一个8岁三年级的男孩来说是个问题吗？？

Why don't you talk to the teacher? If he is chatty during class or work time
, yes it is a problem. He and people he is talking to cannot concentrate.

As long as he knows when to be quiet, it is not a problem. Ask him to
convert some of his "talking" topics/thinking into his writing, he would be
a better student.

老师写得很客气了，如果不是说话多到影响老师上课，我估计老师不会写信给你
换我们小学的时候，估计就是请家长了

This is a typical sanwich type of letter.
first layer of bread: nice boy
middle layer of meat: chatty and needs to put more details in writing
last layer of bread: He's been doing well.
The meat is where you need to pay attention to. For a third grader, being
chatty is a concern. For boys, writing is a common concern.
no big deal, just work on those issues bah.

听起来就是在说我儿子啊：P
除了爱说话以外，writing比较weak。喜欢写短句子，again，就是我儿子啊。我家肚皮
几个月如一日的weekend news都是 i played wii, 后来在我的强烈反对下改成 i
played with xxx（那个周末跟他玩的小朋友名字）

lol，我外甥的作文就是gps，譬如今天我们去哪儿，路过某某路某某桥。要不就是坐公
交，几路车，坐几站，哪几站，到哪站下然后走到哪条路哪条路blabla

是说写的作文里面可以充实内容的一些元素。评语里大部分篇幅都在讲需要提高作文写
作能力。

crafting elements 修饰？
我觉得这是中美文化差异吧，中国古典名著很少描写细节，倒是舍得花大笔墨在环境描
写，旨在营造“意境”，把读者放到那样的环境中，让读者自己体会；西方名著就不同
了，经常花大段描写人物心理，强制读者接受小说人物的当前感受。经常让我看得很憋
闷。

small moment是英文写作训练的一个方法，single event with simple setting, 3年
级的孩子开始练，老师先让孩子写，然后个别辅导一下，让孩子加上更多的细节，对话
，感想等等，让情节更丰满，更beefy一点。crafting elements指写作技巧，比如show
-not-tell(instead of saying Sarah is angry, the kid may write "her face
turned red，stomped the floor and turned away her head etc etc"), 还有一些，
想不起来了

Thanks for explaining, I was wondering what they meant.
if the child needs work on these, I'm sure parents can help in some way, say
, by reading certain type of books or practicing writing? my boy is not
expressive (typical boy?), his language is pretty "dry" and matter-of-fact,
certainly no crafting going on here :) How do I steer him toward "beefier"
language?

我有一朋友，家里2个女儿年纪很接近，2人都爱写点东西，经常“合作”，就是姐姐先
写一点，卡住了，或者妹妹有更好的主意了，就换妹妹上。其实每人写个半张一张纸，
没几轮下来，就是一个很长的故事，小朋友还没有压力，遇到写不下去的时候总有人商
量。我觉得挺好的，就把这主意跟我女儿老师说了一下，她说可以试试，说不定有帮助
。不过我觉得这对父母还是有点要求的，那两个女儿快10岁了，所以有写作基础，如果
是爸爸妈妈充当这个partner的角色，肚子里起码得有点货才行。咱们不是第一代移民
么，英语又不是母语，写这些非专业的东西那肯定得掉层皮，就当跟孩子一起学写作好
了。我刚刚google了一下crafting elements writing这些关键词，网上给了一下书
名，或者你就直接去图书馆问librarians说你想接关于写作技巧的书，肯定大把大把的
有。看看这些书，还有上面的一下小范文，我们就可以照猫画虎跟孩子对着写了。我想
这办法对付对低年级的孩子（1,2,3），我觉得还是够的。等到小学高年级了，帮不了
了，就看孩子自己的写作悟性吧。还有就是，不是每个孩子都爱写点什么的，有些孩子
天生就不expressive，更爱动手的东西，说不定父母怎么推怎么帮孩子都没起色，我也
觉得没什么，对吧。
我女儿现在每周作业是写一个关于family的小篇, 然后学期结束时就能攒成了一本薄薄
的书。这2个多月下来我看她写的干巴巴的文章是越看越生气，不光短，没展开，句式
还很单调，在我看来就像是summary, review之类的东西。我老跟LD说是2年级book
summary写伤了，现在都成习惯了，尽量短尽量少。后来我问她，喜不喜欢被给一个题
目这种办法，她说不喜欢。想想也是，我中学的时候每次考语文最后都是作文，一点
instruction，然后要在40分钟左右时间里写800-1000字，把我难受坏了，到后来一看
到命题作文就发憷。后来我说你就随便写吧，想写什么就写什么，让妈妈看看你的水平
，因为我实在不相信她看那么多书还没反应到写作上来。20分钟后女儿给我一张纸，是
个detective story的开头，那比那about your family的作业不知道要好多少倍。她问
妈妈你要不要跟我一起写，我说我肯定跟不上你这文章的水平，还是你自己发挥吧。后
来她还说学校里要写各种各样的东西，有fiction, non-fiction, review, first
person narrative, 我就跟她说妈妈以后不批评你的文章了，因为我只看到你在一种
style of writing 上的水平，她要是现在不喜欢这种style, 我再怎么给critique也没
用，一来那是我的critique, 我的水平和方法也不一定就是好的对的，二来她要是不感
兴趣的话，我花再多力气这文章也不会有起色，指望孩子不管什么形式都能写得好也不
现实。孩子对自己感兴趣的题材，比如侦探mystery之于我女儿，那写起来就流畅多了

哇，写了这么多，很有启发，太谢谢了。喜欢你这个故事接龙的主意，用来跟娃互动非
常棒。我家娃是典型的爱动手不爱动口的类型，多半是遗传来的。他爹是典型的工科男
，我是语言及其不丰富的文科女，一到写东西的时候就发怵，半天憋不出一句话。可想
而知小朋友将来的斗争会很艰巨呀，sigh

这些年孩子上学的经验：这里老师明面上指出的不足，应该是不可小视的问题了。每次
家长会我都会要求老师直说，不用拐弯抹角的说那些不足。

克林顿小时候也很话多，也经常受批评。
老师不喜欢话多是因为很多时候不好管理。但对孩子本身来说话多是好事。
