没看过书，Wolfram 人是天才；发明的Mathematica也极有用。但看过Physics Today 上
物理界大牛Kadanoff
的书评[1]。Kadanoff说这本书介绍cellular automata 通俗易懂,可惜有关历史不大确切
，而且他把自个当年的专业cellular automata 吹成万能。
可能有象牙塔里的学者嫉妒别人经商赚大钱的心态。不过自己去看看Wolfram给这本书造
势的网页[2]， 觉得Kadanoff说得也不是太过。与其起名《A New Kind of Science》,还
不如老实一点称作《An Introduction to Cellular Automata Through Mathematica》。

我觉得Kadanoff的评论很客观。你揣测别人嫉妒一个商人，未免有以

Leo P. Kadanoff (a physicist and mathematician working at the James Franck
Institute of the University of Chicago) writes:
"From my reading, I cannot support the view that any "new kind of science" is
displayed in Wolfram's new book. I see no new kinds of calculations, no new
analytic theory, and no comparison with experiment.
Per Bak's book, How Nature Works (Copernicus, 1997), covers subjects similar
to those of Gleick and Wolfram and looks specifically at automaton studies and
at Wolfram. Bak

Wolfram 正版的自传里面有"In recognition of his early work in physics and
computing, Wolfram （b.1959）became in 1981 the youngest recipient of a
MacArthur Prize Fellowship." 叫天才也算合适。

Wolfram曾经很有天分，但可惜天分没有被演化成天才。伤仲永的故事并
不乏其他的版本。
Kadanoff哪里说了不该用mathematica? 他只是抱怨Wolfram没有用通用
的数学表达方式，换句话说，他没有用大家通用的语言。这个是事实，
