On the November 8th issue of New Yorker, Jianying Zha wrote this article
titled "Servant of the State" talking about Meng Wang and Xiaobo Liu. It is
a heavy, multiple page essay. Although there are more and more articles on
China, I have not seen anything like this before in New Yorker.
I have admired Liu's spirit for a while, and disliked Meng Wang lining up
with the current government. This article definitely informed more insights
about the history of Wang and made me understand better about his
perspective, why he is doing what he is doing. It is hard to say to the end
who is doing more for a better China. Maybe both types of strategy are
important in reality.
This is a wonderful article. It is not only about each individual of them,
but also the bitter relationship between them. The attack Wang launched at
Liu when the latter was still in prison is shocking and indeed unforgivable.
However, Liu's arrogance over Wang's situation when Wang needs help and
support was similarly unpleasant. Perhaps Liu himself also falls as a
typical Chinese intellectual in "looking down on other scholars (wen ren
xiang qing)".
The story of Wang's personal path was sad and touching. There is too little
information about Liu, probably due to Liu's absence from the public life in
China for so long, or that Ms. Zha does not know Liu in person very well as
she does with Wang.
I strongly recommend the original article to Chinese overseas who care about
China's future.
Ms. Jianying Zha also authored the books "China Pop" and "The 1980s".

UI through Shared Work Program is calculated differently.
Typically, the highest benefit you can claim is limited by the Weekly
Benefit Amount (WBA). For regular unemployment benefit payment, the actual
amount you can get is calculated by WBA minus an earning deduction which is
computed from the gross earnings that week. Yes, it is true that my earning
deduction is way higher than the WBA and nothing I could claim through
regular UI.
However, the Shared Work payments are calculated ba
