1) I-131 allows you (at least in most cases) to return to the US after one
year. Keep in mind green card will not be usable after 1 year away from the
US.
2) Technically, even if you just leave the US for 1 day, USCIS has the right
to take away your green card. So nothing is bulletproof.
3) Regardless I-131, had you been away from the US for more than 6 months
your clock to become citizen resets.
So the short answer to your question is: No, you don't need I-131 if you
return after 6 months. However, your clock to be eligible to apply for the
US citizenship will be reset. And no matter whenever you come back, be
prepared to answer questions, I-131 is not the guarantee you won't get your
green card taken away.

可以多次申请,头两次各管两年.以后每次有效期一年。
