see this article, Challenging the dollar-cost averaging and other bad ideas, from the New York Times. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/01/your-money/challenging-dollar There certainly is some truth in the argument that a lump sum investement should do better than dollar-averaging in the long run: there is more cash waiting on the side line and not doing anything in the dollar-cost averaging approach, therefore it creates a drag on the return.
Most people are not that fortunate to have a big chuck to start with. Besides, to achieve maximum possible return should not be most investors' first goal.

fixed income? what fixed income? bonds/money-market are all other people's liabilities, the risk of which are all significantly underestimated at this moment -- which means bonds/fiat-currencies are all significantly overvalued at this moment. The so called risk-free is only a fairy tale that wall street wants people to believe. There is no safe haven in the paper market. Owning real assets is not a bad idea but they are hard to acquire and store. In addition, if demands get destroyed commodity price will crater.
