Like most of the girls or women, I adore romantic films. Maybe because
reality is so cruel and brutal, real romance is easy to be shattered by the
cruelties of life. Enjoying romantic films, in a way, fills in gaps between
the realities. It doesn’t take a genius to discern that the romance is a
dying film genre with predictable endings and lack of alternative
perceptions. We watched romantic movies, which often are combined with
either thrillers or comedies to stir up the excitement or to spice up the
romance itself. It is time to say no to dreary romantic films.
takes an alternative route, the straightforward, almost
documentary like, approach. Instead of concentrating on excessively
decorative plots, this film follows the daily lives between Jacob, a
furniture-designing college senior, and Anna, Jacob’s poetic classmate.
Like most couples, they encountered their struggle, separation, the longing
for true love, and being together with that true love. The plot is simple,
yet it portraits such a strong image in my mind that I couldn’t just let it
go because it is breathtaking, like a fresh breath of air that lights up my
world. I love how the film tells the audience the story indirectly with
meaningful pauses and poetic dialogues about longing and distance. The
filmmakers document the details of their exchange of emotions using poems,
soundtrack and dramatic lightings. Also the film uses time-lapse photographs
in the airport and during their summer vacation. This film is filled with
waiting and anticipation and sounds very little with the name “like crazy”
, yet it conveys so well about the passionate and ineffable desire between
Jacob and Anna. “ What keeps them together through thick and thin?” you
might be intrigued to want to ask. The film doesn’t explain too much the
root of the two lovers' attraction. Instead, it focuses almost immediately
to the heartache of their separation. Jacob and Anna are trapped by a love
that they couldn’t explain, but the only resolution is to be with each
other. That is the whole film about love, separation, anticipation and
reunion.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
