Well, first of all, most history of philosohy books are either a
mediocre watering-down version of great philosophers' ideas, or a
smart guy's distortion of them based on his own philosophy (e.g.,
Russell's). I am not saying Russell's book is bad (in fact, I like it),
but it's one-sided. A very detailed history of philosophy book I have
used for my comprehensive exam is Copleston's "A history of philosophy"
(9 Vol.), where you can find most of the gossips (jargons,as they say)
of western philoso
