Usually I use bash, but this machine doesn't have
bash. The only sensible alternative is tcsh.
How can I change default shell to tcsh from csh?

use "chsh"

root can change it using "vipw" which modifies the
shell definition in /etc/passwd.

on some machine there is a "chsh" to let user to change shell without root.
