mkdir temp
mv allyourfiles temp
tar -cvf zipped.tar temp
then when you decompress, tar will automatically
put those files back to temp.

tar -Icvf to use bzip2 to compress
or tar -zcvf to use gzip.
(check your version tar first :-)
