if u r a J1 visiting scholar, according to US-PRC tax treaty,
u don't need pay fed tax for your teaching/research income for
first 3 years.
my friend had only 45k when he was a J1, but since it is tax
free, this actually worth more than his income after he changed
to H1B, although his salary was raised a lot.
