Inducted twice into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, initially for The Velvet Underground and posthumously for his solo career, Lou Reed was a rock poet who was as much applauded for his sonic innovations as his embodiment of the New York cool.
The Velvet Underground, Nico, Andy Warhol
Led by curator Kevin Parks of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, this episode of peakaboo tells the story of Lou Reed through the exhibition at the institution that is now the custodian of Lou Reed’s archive.
Born on Long Island, New York in 1942 to the family of an accountant,Reed was an aficionado of music and poetry. Though he long intended to be arockstar, Reed was unaffected by the ostentatious lifestyle that theromanticization of this art form harbors on. When Andy Warhol’s reign budded inNew York City in the mid-1960s, he designated the freshly minted rock band, TheVelvet Underground to be The Factory’s house band. As the band’s frontman, LouReed’s renegade attitude was soon accentuated under the radical limelight.

Theband’s music fell flat to the market of its time, an ironic story arc that madethe band more revered for their noisy sonic innovations, injections of taboosubjects into a coddled industry that was dominated by feel-good tunes of utopias, and as the voice for disenfranchised youths whose only certainties were to break away In contrast to mixing stark electric chords with deep strains of drones, Reed had a resolutely uncomplicated style when it comes to the lyrics. Nothing was more appealing to Reed than quotidian nuances in New York City; for him, heroes were not famed faces printed in newspapers and aired on TV, but the everyday performer that one sees on a street corner or the fleeting fallen soul on Coney Island.
Fittingly plucked from Lou Reed’s lyrics as the exhibition’s title, “Lou Reed: Caught Between the Twisted Stars,” this walkthrough unravels the intricate layers of Reed’s life in question. From personal artifacts to unreleased demo tapes, we begin to experience the life of someone whose touches in New York revolutionized music as the world knew it.
The entire Lou Reed archive is now accessible to the public on the third floor of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
