(Broadway and off Broadway)
Broadway theater, or Broadway, is a center for theatrical performances performed in the Theater District along Broadway in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, and at the many professional theaters at Lincoln Center. Broadway represents the highest level of live musicals in the English-speaking world of the United States. The Broadway District, including all the avant-garde theaters of Off-Broadway, is a famous tourist attraction in New York City.
Regarding musicals performed on Broadway, historian Martin Schefter believes that "'Broadway musicals' reached their peak in the works of Rodgers and Hammerstein and became a hugely influential art form in American popular culture", and contributed to New York City becoming the musical theater capital of the world. The Broadway Museum on West 45th Street opens to the public in November 2022, becoming the first museum to document the history and experience of Broadway theater and its profound impact on Midtown Manhattan and Times Square.
Broadway is the area's namesake and connects to Times Square, but only three theaters are located on Broadway, the Broadway Theatre, the Palace Theater and the Winter Garden Theatre. The term "Broadway theater" generally refers to a venue that seats at least 500 people, with smaller theaters extending off Broadway known as "Off-Broadway." Today, small venues with fewer than 100 seats, regardless of their location, are known as "Off-Broadway," or "Off-Off Broadway."
【The Phantom of the Opera】。
