知道这个谚语吗？ It ain't over till the fat lady sings.

It ain't over till the fat lady sings.是个比较口语化的表达，意思是： Nothing is irreversible until the final act is played out. 

 It is not over yet. 尚未成定局，结果难料。

 

这是个很流行的表达法，昨晚在电影Independent Day里再次听到。今早来公司，还问了问对面的美国同事，测试一下到底有多popular。看来是很常用的。

 

这个表达, 有人说，是源于德国十九世纪Richard Wagner's音乐歌剧The Ring of the Nibelung里的一个熟悉角色，名叫Brunnhilde，常常由胖胖女子扮演，在最后十几分钟或近二十分钟里压轴独唱(歌剧很长，长达14多个小时)。所以， 'When the fat lady sings' is a reasonable answer to the question 'when will it be over?'

但也有人说，不是这个典故，因为，印刷的文字记载表明是从1970s开始出现的, 源于一个叫Dan Cook的体育解说员， 在德州体育比赛时说的一句话“ The opera ain't over till the fat lady sings", 而广为流传的。

 

Anyway, 在讲述上述故事后，这个表达的意思就显而易见了。相似的表达有：

As long as the organ is playing, church is not out.

Don't count your chickens until they're hatched.

Nothing is carved in stone.

突然想到一点，不妨在此加上。这个谚语里的“fat lady"会不会哪里日被人说成有politically incorrect之嫌，而招人摈弃啊？
