''Memory''新解。20170526

你当然听过Andrew Lloyd Weber歌舞剧''猫''里的这首极好听的歌。第一次听到这首单曲大约在二十多年前在布朗士第一份教职的学校里，系里Pete在一台简旧的计算机上找到这首曲子，虽然是单调的扬琴，当时觉得太好听了。我最喜欢的版本依次是Elaine Paige, Barbara Streisand, 及 Glen Close. ''猫''剧的词作者是T.S. Eliot，但是全剧最著名的''memory''却是由Trevor Nunn从艾略特的诗作''Rpapsody on a Windy Night''改编的。

当然我后来又仔细谷歌了一下，这''猫''剧的作曲，是安德鲁·劳埃德·韦伯（Andrew Lloyd Webber）于1977年底开始撰写的，并于1980年在音乐节上首次上演。诗词作者艾略特的妻子瓦莱丽·艾略特，出席首映式后，极喜欢韦伯的谱曲，于是韦伯把自幼喜爱的一本书变成一个音乐舞台剧，排练于1981年初在新伦敦剧院开始。由于艾略特遗产声明不写脚本，只使用原始诗作为文本，音乐剧在排练过程中导致许多演员对自己没有故事情节的角色感到困惑。整剧不寻常的谱曲，序曲融合了fugue，有时音乐伴随诗句。剧情完全靠音乐演绎，几乎没有对话。舞蹈也是音乐中的关键元素，特别是在10分钟的“杰利蔻”舞曲序列中。由超大型垃圾场组成的背景在整台节目中保持不变，没有任何场景变化。劳埃德·韦伯的折衷主义在这里非常强大，音乐流派范围从古典到流行音乐，音乐厅，爵士乐，摇滚和电声音乐以及赞美诗歌，如“猫的addressing”。猫在1981年5月11日在新伦敦剧院首演，最初由于（我们非常熟悉的英美电影和舞台剧）演员朱莉·丹奇（Grizabella的角色）在伦敦开幕之前的排练中撕裂了脚跟腱。于是Elaine Paige得到Grizabella的角色。作为伦敦史上最长的音乐剧，截止到2006年10月8日，''猫''才被''悲惨世界''超越。

无人否认''memory''的旋律和词的优美。可谓百听不厌，千分陶醉。每次回国卡拉OK，别的犹可，''memory''一定要唱的，好友雅芝低声嘟囔，''咿，她会唱这个歌？''曲之优美，词之忧伤，却从未细细想过它的真正含义，也不必去想。就像整个''猫''剧，重点全在谱曲的技术创新，不懂音乐理论的人只要睁眼欣赏舞台上群猫乱舞的美，闭眼聆听音乐就足矣！

前天给考完AP的班级作折纸Origami Project（有人欢喜有人哭的课堂作业），同时把YouTube上各种版本的''memory''作为背景音乐放出来听，希望学生会喜欢。

我知道各个明星有稍微不同的歌词版本，Elaine Paige这个版本，我特地仔细看了她那个撕心裂肺，捶胸顿足的''Touch me

 Look，A new day has begun'' 我突然醒悟到以前对memory的理解可能不全面。猫是基于T.E.Eliot “老年人实用猫书''改编的音乐剧，讲述一群''杰利蔻''部落的猫，在作''杰利蔻选择''的一个夜晚，决定哪一只猫将上升至重面层并重新开始新的生活。年轻的时候一直以为''it is easy to leave me, all alone with the memory……''是有关情爱的记忆，现在体会更应该是年老体衰后，''记忆''之容易离开，对不对？

把我的醒悟跟系里有点年龄的同事分享，得到一段相似的坦白，''我童年时代一直非常喜欢一首歌词和曲，但不甚理解词意，直至二十七岁那年方才明白原来是痛悼年轻时由人工流产而失去的胚胎……恍然大悟的那天竟然伤心啜泣得喘不过气来……''

虽然没有那么夸张，但in the grand scheme of the universe, 我们每个人的''memory''在时间这个横轴上终将是离去的，只希望它慢走，再慢…
