A Verse by Huang Tingjian

(The Tale of the Tippler’s Pavilion)

Around the Town of Chu, hills far and nigh,

Mt. Langya is the greenest one in eie.

Along its path walking a few li,

A roof, like a bird spreading its wings,

Appears above a fountain, O ‘tis none but

The Tippler’s Pavilion that ye espie,

The hills and rills nearby

Really gladdens that tippler’s heart,

And with wine his spirit can soar high.

The fragrant flowers and goodly grass and trees

Baske in the sunlight and breeze,

Behold, the vista endless under the sky.

All revelers sans sigh

Hike here with dainty produce from the hills.

So good is wine, and so sweet spring water.

With fingers-game, cup after cup he doth not defy.

The governor hath drowned in this intoxication,

Revelers around him cheerfully cry.

A feast like this doth not have to rely on

Any instrument of string or wind,

The governor draws joy from people’s joy sans alibi.

Ye mote wonder who this governor is,

He’s no one but that tipsy guy.
