Today we started moving backwards towards California. We started by travelling into Devil’s Tower, a very strange rock formation because of how far it jutted out from the surrounding hills. Apparently to fully appreciate Devil’s Tower you had to watch the movie that featured it. We then drove westward into Montana so we could go into Yellowstone National Park from the north exit. As we got into Yellowstone in the afternoon, we only saw a portion of the park today. We saw the Mammoth Springs, which featured hot springs and colorful rock. The highlight of the day was when we saw 3 elk right next to the trail. One of them was butting heads with the fence as well as prancing around. It was the closest I’ve been to large wildlife by far. We finished off the day by seeing the Yellowstone Grand Canyon. It featured the same kind of canyon with a spectrum of colors topped off by a waterfall on one side. I am more excited by tomorrow because we will see the geysers.
Yellowstone National Park is very colorful. It’s not just plants and animals, but the actual rock ranges from hues of pink to brown to pale blue. According to the signs, the colors are actually living creatures called “thermophiles.” For some suspicious reason, the colors are accompanied by the smell of rotting eggs, or, to be scientific, hydrogen sulfur, and are only found around the hot springs. The hot springs are puddles of running water accompanied by steam. Supposedly they are very hot (but I’d rather not risk my toes to test it).
