I want to apply one inhibitor study in the proposal, found the inhibitor(one
small molecule) was patented. the synthesis of the inhibitor might be easy
so I can find an chemist to help. I contact the patent holder for offering
but without reponse. I am wondering whether I need to get the holder's
permission to propose or I can go ahead collaborate with chemist. I ran into
this situation for the first time, do want to get any legal or ethical
trouble. Hope to get help from you. thanks and happy new year!

What is the purpose to contact the inventor? The patent does not prevent
others to do research but profit. If you are making money from this
inhibitor, you need to arrange a licensing. It sounds like that you are
simply doing research, there is no point to even contact the holder. In many
cases, the holder does not really "hold" the patents while the company or
university or whatever organization often hold the patents.
