Department Description
Biotechnology and Bioengineering Department, located in Livermore,

Primary Job Duties
Sandia/California Biotechnology and Bioengineering Department is seeking a
postdoctoral appointee to join a multidisciplinary team using recent
advances in gene editing technology (CRISPR) for genome-wide knockout
screening in human cells and for development of novel in vivo CRISPR
delivery platforms. We aim to understand the fundamental mechanisms of viral
infection of biodefense-related pathogens through these studies with the
potential to discover host-directed therapeutic targets. The successful
postdoctoral candidate will help develop large-scale gene knockout screening
assays to test against multiple virus models, work with an engineering team
to develop nanoparticle-based CRISPR delivery vehicles, and transition in
vitro findings to animal models. The successful postdoctoral candidate will
also be responsible for the effective communication of research results
through publications and conference presentations.
Required
Candidates must have a recent PhD degree in virology, molecular biology,
cell biology, immunology, or a related field. The candidate must be a strong
individual contributor within a multidisciplinary team comprising engineers
, biologists, chemists, and programmers, within the framework of a milestone
-driven research project. Strong written and oral communication skills are
required. A demonstrated record of high technical achievement (e.g. as
evidenced by publication in high-impact scientific journals) and the
demonstrated ability to conduct creative, independent research is required.
Desired
Experience in the following areas is highly desired: Gene editing technology
(e.g. CRISPR), high-throughput screening methods, next-gen sequencing,
imaging, handling viruses at Biosafety Level 2 (or higher), and animal
models of infectious disease.
Security Clearance
No clearance required. This position does not currently require a
Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance. Sandia will conduct a
pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks,
law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications.
Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background
screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use,

一年拿4,5万的大把.
再说了,在东西海岸的,在那里工作又不等于在那里生活.

At this age, retirement should be considered. if 4% withdraw rate is safe,
and 70% income in retirement is enough, no matter what, monthly save for
this, 1000 is necessary. (this is based on calculation of 12000 save each
year, 30 years, and 8% return, total 1.5 M, no inflation adjustment.)

The numbers above come to me because I have a daughter who is earning more
than that, and living in a city with a living cost like Livermore. Just by
herself, she can survive, save enough for her retirement. However, no chance
to buy an apartment....

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and calculations.
It is very true that even with an annual salary of $85K it is challenging to
buy a house and save enough for retirement at the same time in Livermore.
However, for most biology postdocs this is already way better than regular
pay from other schools.
Those who do not have financial freedom and still want to live a normal life
should not choose this major.

经历过，所以，对理财这个题目还比较熟悉。
无论生活在那里，我自己的体会是家庭收入如果能达到当地median的两倍，可以有一个
decent的生活。毕竟，房价还是和当地收入有关联的。博士后起价八万五在我们领域是
不算少，但不能很快找到更稳定和收入更高的位置，后面离退休越来越近，还是让人很
压抑的。
