I got teaching evaluation 4.2/5 this semester. But the department gives me a
negative review for teaching ineffective. They argue that my teaching is
below the average of the department and the school. I am teaching the most
difficult course with historically high failure rate. In other words,I am
teaching a " weed out" course.
Do you think that I need to change school since clearly someone in my
department does not appreciate my teaching.

和iPad相比，虽然玩游戏和上网一般般，但是能做的事情多了，比如记笔记，
搞photoshop，做ppt、latex，跑个简单的matlab啥的。
一个3G手机加这个Slate出差就够了。路上可以tether。打算出来以后入一
个。

It is supposed to be a research school with PhD program. The teaching load
is 2: 2. The failing rate is usually 40%-50%

每个学校,每个系的标准都是不一样的.
我觉得和评分系统有关系.
有的学校评分只有1,2,3,4,5五档,我们学校还有个0档,
特SB--面对辛辛苦苦上一学期课的老师给0分的学生会是什么样的BT.
学生在面对0,1,2,3,4,5时比1,2,3,4,5更倾向于选择3,
面对后者时倾向选择4.
大家都知道3虽然上面写的是good,其实是fair.
不过一个学校都这样,评分标准也跟别的学校不一样,3.3就算meet expectation了.
我上学期的两门课,研究生的课接近4.0,本科生的课接近3.8,我已经很满意了....

每个系的文化不一样。我在的系里，有几个资深教授喜欢把课搞难一点，让学生在Lab
里多熬熬夜。学生的评估，只要不差就行。号称学生评估不能真正反映教学质量。这种
观点我是比较赞同的。

Negative comments do not mean a negative review. A negative review is someth
ing like "you are incompetent for the teaching task", while some negative co
mments just mean "you need to improve your teaching".
I guess you are just the latter case.

NO. I am the only foreigner in the department and the only one who is young
. So most of my coworkers get better evaluations since they can tell jokes
and also teach easy courses. i just felt that it is really unfair.

what's the average score in your class? if it's D+, make it C. if it's a C,
make it a B-.

分数高低不能一概而论，主要看你们系的culture。不建议找dean。那是迫不得已最后
使用的方法。一般找了也没用。可以问问chair同一门课程以前的teaching evaluation
平均分数是多少。
避免使用“the most difficult course”这样的主观字眼。另外，希望你没有跟系里
其他人说“the students learned nothing from the prerequisite courses at all.”
总体来说我同意前边几位的判断，你们系里肯定有人很不满意你，应该开始做两手准备
了。

知道你心情不好，要心平气和，心平气和地和系主任谈谈。
搞清楚系里average是多少，对你的期望是多少。这是你第几年呀？系主任有责任跟你
谈清楚的吧。

不建议找Dean
可以找系主任委婉的问问，比如问问如何改进teching，学校有没有什么program可以帮
助提高teaching等等
