One of my friend, civil/structural engineer, start working 01/2004 as fresh
graduate with MS degree.
0-0.5 year 45000, company 1 (NV)
0.6-1.5 year 62000, company 2 (LA, CA)
1.6-2.0 year 72000, company 3 (LA, CA, get PE license)
2.1-2.5 year 90000, company 4 (LA, CA)
2.6-today, >120000, Own civil/structural company (LA, CA)

也要看做什么的，如果搞些小的，象house remodel之类的，自己开个公司也都可以搞
了。

Nothing is impossible. Just like the CS people talking about Mr.Gates,kidding.
People will understand that there are always genius out there, although we
are just average people.
My point is we need to encourage people to post here and everyone could have
opinion on it. One person's world is sometimes too small. That's the reason
why this forum is openning.

having a company is very easy. in this field lots of experiences are needed
before a company is opened. 95% of the companies fail during the first five years. wish him a good luck.

小打小闹的，有一定市场。我知道一个台湾人，专门作酒店的大理石装修，如果从钱
来衡量，就像国内搞装修的包工头一样，他比这里大多数土木人都成功。你要说有钱就
是牛B, 我也不好说什么了。

最令我好奇的是,这个人是不是工作之前就有GC或者是公民了？
跳了这么多公司，而且每个只待个半年，如何申请绿卡？　NIW？或者杰出人才申请的?
一般靠公司申请绿卡的,能在这么短时间内换这么多家公司吗？

If you really learn hard and got expose to different projects. you learn
much faster than people just do the same type of projects for 10 years.
with his three company exprience, i don't see it's a big deal. also he can
just do one type of projects.
experience is important, you are definate more valuable in our field. But
this is a very normal story. I work 2.5 years now and I am a project manager
. Small firm though. I know my friend worked for 2 years and became the
chief engineer of a small

I doubt that his salary includes over-time pay instead of base salary.

Your company is really tough for PM. 5 million/year project? In this case,
the PM can at least support 10 full-time employees. Bu assuming $100 per
hour rate,working for 2080 hours per year.(5,000,000/2/100/2080=12). I don't
think our branch boss could do that, who in charge of 30+ people. I am
just wondering how much your PM could make?
I think people saying PM here could only be equivalent to your project
engineer.

That really depends on projects you are doing.
If you are doing high rise building/bridges, you may not be able to start
even a small company even you have 40 years experience.
If you are in residenial field, you can do that quickly if you are good.
Most projects are small and most of them design fee is less than 10K but you
can do that in a few weeks.
If you keep working in big companys and doing big projects, your career is
fixed into Sr. Engineer and you won't get chance to start your own bu

That is what you think and it does not mean the truth.
If you are keeping doing same thing, or always same or similar part of one
project, even 30 years, no help for you to be a project engineer or project
manager.
What my friend did is totally true and that is also my goal.

No. No green card yet for him.
What he is doing is H1B transfer everytime. 9 month ago, transfer H1B to his
own company. That means his own company hired him as empoyee.

MY company 50 people, 14 people in the structural department.
My responsibility include writing proposal, pricing, creating work sheet,
scheduling, review design (I do design my self too) and seal, prebilling
review. most projects are $15k to $40k design fee. I am doing one that is
around $200k though.
I do have a phD and get PE before my PhD degree.

CA PE require 1 year of experience if you have a MS degree. They are tough
on test but not one experience. They don't need degree evaluation like other
states if you have a forien BS degree like most of us.

tran, remember, Engineer/company only accept jobs what they can do. If out
of experience or ability, do not send proposal, do not take the job. That is
it.
Also, as I mentioned before, most projects are not big, just wood house or
small office building with steel/CMU/concrete,it is not that hard.
Liability is low.
You are thinking all structural engineering work like bridge or high rise
building. That is different story. Also nobody will trust small firm to do
design big building. In the mean

Wrong guess.
There is no GC requirement for openning a company.
Even F1 can register a company.
