Question about Viennese Waltz# Dance - 轻舞飞扬

Learned a bit Viennese Waltz last night. The teacher said i was sort of
jumping; i thought it was because i tried to catch the fast tempo. But there
's something about footwork to make it smooth. How can I do it fast and
smooth at the same time? Can anybody point out the key technique?
Also, i am supposed to be able to move by myself (instead of completely
relying on a partner) so that i have my own balance. is that right?

pass your foot in straight line, also move in straight line ba, that will

Stay low and soft knee? I think that helps you with the jumpy step...

It's hard to diagnose technical problems on paper. It'd so much easier if
you would post one of your practice video clips.
Are you jumpy on reverse turns or natural turns? It could be you "launch"
your body when reverse turning at too steep an angle?...

Thx for all the replies.
I confess: i want to do V waltz for fun, on top of paso doble (which i am
more serious about) in the studio showcase. I have to blame myself for
trying to take a shortcut. Rome is not built in one day - nor is viennese
waltz learned in two classes ;)
However, for the competition two months ago, i planned to do 3 latin dances,
and added a waltz the last minute (just to have fun). I spent 30 minutes
with my teacher and got a routine. It turned out my best dance at the
comp

They are the same. Except when posing or changing direction abruptly, in all
five standard dances, especially waltz and foxtrot, body weight should stay
on one foot at a time for as long as the music allows, and the time the
weight is split between two feet should be minimized, so as to make the
movement more energy efficient and lend the dance a sense of serenity and
suave.

I was having the same problem. My instructor gave me two reasons:
1. I was doing a little bit rise and fall
2. I was attempting to make larger step

Thanks! I've just started to observe the rule of "staying on one foot at a
time for as long as the music allows" in the Luca clip Musique provided.
Their sharp swing-and-hold in the foxtrot is so beautiful. Feel I am getting
a bit obsessed with standard/smooth now...

You are right - these two are not possible for fast music tempo; that's what
i did while trying to catch the music. Plus, if i spend some time on split
weight between two feet, it enhances the jumpy part.

The point is not whether you should or should not make large strides.
Vianese Waltz could be danced with extremely large strides with little
effort. It is not the goal but the effect of "efficient" and musical dancing
. The question is whether you are executing swinging motion, which entails
letting gravity do most of if not all the work not your muscle. You should
never LABOR for large strides. To facilitate that, your and your partner's
bodies and the different parts of the bodies need a huge

it depends on whether you start with natural or reverse turn. principle of
alignment is the same as in waltz.

i c. i am low hand ya, have to always start with natural :( //blush
but i already forgot what i said last time. then after i felt messy about VW,
then i started thinking why i felt so messy, then i realized that, my
orientation was wrong! :(

i have never thought about how alignment would be different in v.w., now
that you mentioned it of course it would be since the amount of turn is
different. i'm glad i learned something:)

i dont know about amount of turn tho :( //blush
it kills too many brain cells just try to figure out how many degrees we
need to turn in VW.
you dont have to know ya, because you are follower ya
i have to know it acurately because the next important thing is the change,
during the change between natural and reverse, we need to change a small
angle, from DW to DC or DC to DW, if we mess up the first part, we then will
mess up the change, and then we mess up the second part, then we look ugly,
