I had a dinner with one senior faculty (and there were two other young faculties as well), but the senior faculty
led the conversions at the table. He was full of himself. Whatever answers I gave to him in response to his
questions, he would say "no", or "that is not right". It was depressing, and
it dragged me into a negative cycle. Could I have screwed up my interview
during the dinner? Will one person dispute the entire decision on hiring a candidate?

Don't worry about it too much. You don't know what you were expected. Some people just look serious but may be nice.

我现在呆的学校，当时晚饭的时候三个人，一个senior,两个junior。没一个对我有好
印象。一顿饭吃下来，不停的挑刺，极端mean和不客气。但是，最后dean还有senior
associate dean for research还是把offer给了我。我感觉吃饭不是关键。关键是那些
关键的人对你的research感兴趣觉得有价值。
有些senior的人做的研究很可能过时的，他们对新人很mean，有的时候是一种恐惧。现
在那个一起吃饭的senior退休了，我再没见过他。而两个jurnior，做的极差，我觉得
tenure是没戏了。
所以，好好回想一下，见多数senior faculty还有dean, chair什么的时候，他们的态
度如何，对你做的东西感兴趣不。。不要被一顿晚饭打趴了。

patpat,这种mean人哪儿都有的。我以前见过一个，她给所有的interviewee的评语都是
，this is the worst interview i have had in the past XXX　years.后来
committee讨论的时候都把她的评语当笑话讲。

I had a very similar situation a few year ago. But I was having with just
one senior faculty. He always bossed me around, say similarly: "no", "that
is not right", etc. He even hinted to me that he will be next Department
head. I was very upset. Immediately, that school was my lowest backup. Later
I heard that this guy made a lot of troubles in the department and
university and was fired.
So, do not care much! Of course, if you have more choices, this one should
not be your No.1.
