Yes. If your proposal can be funded for R21, it is probably good for R01.
Although preliminary data is not required, but that's just not true during
the study section. Also, you are not protected by the new investigator
status.

跟R01差不多的payline ，还没有对新人的照顾。当然，也不需要R01那么多
preliminary study 来support,可以探索新idea.

那倒未必。我拿到的第一个grant就是R21.
不过payline确实比R01还低。

That's right, and it is not renewable. I bet you can get R01 with similar
proposal, you just gave up 3 years and ability to renew.

申请的时候其实是有顾虑的。因为我propose的东西是很方法学的,比较novel。但数据
又不足于支撑一个hypothesis driven R01。抱着练手的心情申请没想到中了。

我以前的老板申R21被据，reviewer建议投R01,然后就中了。
