Yeah, potassium chloride is one of the 3 components in lethal injection. No kidding. But as long as you do not inject it into your body, I don't think that you will get excess amount in your body.
As long as you have healthy kidneys, oral intake of potassium chloride is absolutely safe. (IV injection of KCl is a totally different matter and is lethal). The problem of using KCl as salt substitute is its taste. It just doesn't taste as good.

Potassium salt can actually help lower blood pressure. hypertension patients are encouraged to adopt a low sodium high potassium diet, as long as their kidney function is normal. In average American diet, potassium intake is usually lower than the daily requirement. As such, KCl is a good substitue for table salt. problem is nobody likes its taste.
