My background:
EE PhD in 2008, top 3 US university.
Started working for a startup company after PhD. Company is very small
with just a few people.
Publication: 14 journal papers, including 6 first authored papers.
Journals rank quite high in the field but IF is low due to field. 30
conference papers, of which 7 are first authored. A few invited talks.
Citations: about 250, >100 independent citations.
Review: 8 times for journal articles by the time of submission of
application. Also reviewed >20

Definitely start preparing your materials early. It took me quite a while to
get everything in place, especially the support letters.
